Executive Search and Interim Leadership Talent

. . . but is your business ready to capitalise on truly innovative software development?

Digital transformation is now being embraced outside of software engineering, uber trendy app development and early stage tech product business. Agile approaches are scaling into non-IT business areas through a collaborative enterprise wide approach utilising common tooling, customer centric thinking and innovation.

New skill sets have been adopted such as in digital marketing, user experience, data science, big-data specialists, security and next generation information architecture. The talent of an organisations people is critically important and their growth is instrumental to success. Accordingly, structured learning, development and mentoring opportunities are being made available supported by job role and skill set communities; which have proven extremely popular including in SMEs and Corporate environments.

I was discussing the transformation around the offices of the CIO and CMO in a forum at Cranfield University’s IT Leadership Programme, where I gained some real life insight from a course contributor, Andrew Radcliffe into what huge commercial gains can be achieved through the adoption of Agile methodologies with the right individual and corporate focus.

Andrew Radcliffe, Head of Software Development at Ordnance Survey (OS), is a hands-on, technology focussed, IT leader with extensive experience in building digital capability. Andrew leads the delivery of major software development projects using Agile approaches and has delivered into numerous markets internationally. Andrew’s passion is to build amazing digital products, capability in technical people and to achieve efficiency in the software development process.

Andrew’s experience has shown that undertaking the Digital Transformation using a lean customer development approach, Agile Software Engineering has played a key role in enabling a significant cultural change. At OS, Collaboration and customer data is now valued above process. Productivity in the development team has increased resulting in faster customer delivery, lower engineering and customer costs, better customer prioritisation and higher product and service quality across B2C, B2B and B2G markets.

Within the engineering teams, the use of modern architectures and patterns is paying dividends. Micro-services, containerisation and self-healing capability have been instrumental in achieving a fast and flexible delivery architecture. Automation through continuous integration and continuous delivery has improved software quality and speed into production. Working with IT operations through a collaborative DevOps approach has proven to break down old working barriers within the IT department; and Developers are happy that they have an integrated developer experience and infrastructure is provisioned now faster than ever before through code. Developer tool workflow has been modernised, resulting in an efficient and accelerated software development process suitable for the digital era where speed to market is so important.

To meet business demands, and provide a competitive proposition back to the business, engineering capacity at OS has been increased through strategic relationships with external software development companies to enable resource flex. Not a traditional outsourced customer-supplier relationship, rather, partner relationships where Agile Software Engineering is being practiced at distance using virtually co-located remote teams with some outstanding results!

Andrew is currently advising other business on how to best adopt these strategies and execute an effective Agile approach and he is happy to share first hand his experiences and learning, so please feel free to get in touch if you’d like more information or wish to connect directly with Andrew.

We are also looking to gauge interest levels for a round table discussion and/or Q&A forum in January on Digital Transformation with Andrew and a leading Digital Marketing CEO facilitating.
